The molecular models of nitrile–butadiene rubber (NBR) with varied contents of acrylonitrile (ACN) were developed and investigated to provide an understanding of the enhancement mechanisms of ACN. The investigation was conducted using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate and predict the mechanical and tribological properties of NBR through the constant strain method and the shearing model. The MD simulation results showed that the mechanical properties of NBR showed an increasing trend until the content of ACN reached 40%. The mechanism to enhance the strength of the rubber by ACN was investigated and analyzed by assessing the binding energy, radius of gyration, mean square displacement, and free volume. The abrasion rate (AR) of NBR was calculated using Fe-NBR-Fe models during the friction processes. The wear results of atomistic simulations indicated that the NBR with 40% ACN content had the best tribological properties due to the synergy among appropriate polarity, rigidity, and chain length of the NBR molecules. In addition, the random forest regression model of predicted AR, based on the dataset of feature parameters extracted by the MD models, was developed to obtain the variable importance for identifying the highly correlated parameters of AR. The torsion–bend–bend energy was obtained and used to successfully predict the AR trend on the new NBR models with other acrylonitrile contents....
This paper investigates the effect of graphene oxide (GO) particles on the friction reduction and wear resistance of coatings on a Ti-6Al-4V alloy generated using the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) technique. Different concentrations of GO were added in aluminate–phosphate electrolyte. The composition of the MAO coatings was investigated using X-ray diffraction and the energy dispersive spectrum. Measurements of the coating’s thickness, hardness, and roughness have also been conducted. Ball-on-disk friction tests under dry conditions were carried out to reveal the tribological behavior of the MAO coating. The results showed that the coating consisted of Al2TiO5 and γ-Al2O3. The addition of GO greatly reduced the friction coefficient by 25%. The coating with 5 g/L of GO particles exhibited the lowest friction coefficient (reduced from 0.47 to 0.35). Moreover, the coating thickness become thicker (from 10 to 20 μm) with an increase in GO concentration from 0 to 10 g/L. The wear mechanism was revealed via worn surface analysis. This study provides a helpful way to improve the surface wear resistance of titanium alloys....
Chromium and silicon are often introduced to increase the performance of TiAlN hard coatings in dry tribological contacts. The addition of Cr and Si during a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) deposition process leads to high-quality TiAlCrSiN films. In this paper, the analysis of friction and wear of these films is conducted by oscillation tribometry under dry conditions with a subsequent mapping of the surface topography. Both abrasion- and adhesion-dominated conditions are realized using different steel counter bodies. Oscillation-frequency-dependent experiments show a significant impact of the compositional variation on friction and wear. It is shown that the TiAlCrSiN coating investigated has a higher coefficient of friction and a lower wear resistance compared to counterparts made of 100Cr6. The friction coefficient could be reduced by using a V2A counterpart. The results can be understood in terms of a reduced adhesion of both oxidic and metallic wear debris at the TiAlCrSiN surface. The study provides valuable progress towards the development of advanced cutting tools, e.g., for stainless steel....
The tribological characteristics of a below 1 mm micro ball bearing comprising steel disc and cages coated with thin copper and silver films were investigated. Electroplating and laser cutting were used to manufacture used elements. Friction was measured using a linear stage and an adapted version of a friction-loop method. The obtained results show an interesting relationship between the geometric properties of the micro scale thrust bearing and their performance and operational stability, which can be correlated to similar relationships observed in the macro scale. The most optimal design of the bearing showed stable operation, with the simplified rolling resistance coefficient in the range 0.002 to 0.003, independently of applied load, which was in range 150 mN to 1500 mN. The possibility of creating easily manufacturable micro ball bearings with a low rolling resistance coefficient comprised solely of cheap and sturdy elements was shown....
This study investigates the friction-reducing potential of “micro surface texturing” on H-13 steel metal surfaces. Tribological tests were performed on a ball-on-plate reciprocating tribometer using SAE30 oil. Circular micro textures with a 0.1 mm diameter and 5–8 μm depth were applied at varying area densities (5%, 10%, and 15%). The results were compared to identify the most effective area density for the micro textures. A friction reduction of 37.95% was observed compared to the untextured sample at 15% area density. The average friction for all the textures is reduced, which shows the effectiveness of laser surface texturing on tribological performance....
